Welcome to the Hogtown Syncopators website, now updated by me, Mike Daley, electric guitarist in the group. I'll try to keep this page current with news, Rex lineups, and so on.

We're still doing Fridays at the Rex 4-6. Pay-what-you-can cover. This Friday it's the four-piece Hogtowns, just missing Drew. So expect a guitar extravaganza. Or a guitarvaganza.

We're now available on the iTunes music store for instant download. You can buy individual songs for 99 cents each or our whole 2007 album for $9.99. Just open the iTunes music store in your iTunes program and search for our name. Which is Hogtown Syncopators (just copy and paste it!).

That's all I've got. See you at the Rex!

Hogtown. Syncopators.

It's been a long old time since I set fingers to keyboard and lovingly constructed a Hogtown Syncopators-type email to you good folks, and I'd like to claim that I've been in a Turkish prison, the kind without internet access. But that would be erroneous, and also incorrect. The mundane truth is that I've had some sort of formatting problem with the mailing list, which I have only now gotten around to correcting, or de-erroneousing.
You may have thought that the Hogs were on ice, and in a way that was true. Between Terra's European vacation and Drew's Vinyl Cafe tour with the Bebop Cowboys, this band was relatively quiet through the fall. We did continue to play Friday afternoons at the Rex Hotel with various substitute musicians, but this band is really a band and we are now performing again with the full original recipe.

The Rex Hotel, conveniently located on Queen Street just west of University, is still the place to be on Friday afternoons between 4 pm and 6 pm. Cover is pay-what-you-can-get-away-with.

Our CD release is slated for February 9 at Hugh's Room. More on this in a subsequent missive.

For our west end homies, we will be at Gate 403 (403 Roncesvalles) on January 12.

I really mean it this time: thanks for a great 2006 and we're looking forward to another year of hot jazz, swing, jump, etc.

Today's theme: co-opting corporate slogans.
Hogtown Syncopators: I'm Lovin' It.

Our first cover story has appeared, in View magazine, the Hamilton alternative weekly. Pretty picture is here. Check out the story here and read a learned and pretentious interview with your humble correspondent. Which would be me. If we're just meeting, I'm Mike Daley, guitarist and chief stressbunny for the Hogtown Syncopators. I'm here to tell you about what we're doing, where we're playing, and the like.

Our debut CD is simmering nicely on the grand stove of recorded jazz. We expect to have a "limited edition" (which is hype-speak for a short run of 100 copies) ready to go by the second week of August, with a full release in September or October. Feast your earballs on mp3s at http://hogtownsyncopators.com.

We've got gigs. First on the roster is the Pepper Jack Cafe in Hamilton this coming Sunday July 30. We'll be starting at 8 pm, after the swing dance lesson. $10 cover. You can just bat the swing dancers out of the way if you're trying to get to the bar for a third Manhattan. Come early for the mosh pit.

We start a residency at the Rex Hotel Jazz and Blues Bar on Friday, August 4. No cover. We'll be doing the regular 4 pm - 6 pm slot on Friday until the last syllable of recorded time. Then we'll get a gig somewhere else.

Don't neglect the Gate 403. Compared to the Gate 403, the Rex is a stadium. Get up close and personal. "Accidentally" poke Drew with your shrimp fork. Seriously, please do it. I'll buy you a beer. Saturday, August 5, 9 pm start. No cover.

For the love of all that is holy, put on some madras shorts and check us out at the Oakville Jazz Festival - Centennial Square Stage (at Lakeshore and Navy) on Saturday, August 12 from 1:30 to 3:30.

Do you exhibit the woozy demeanour of the over-informed? Is your datebook warm to the touch from constant notations? Then rest easy, sweet thing. It's all over. Cool green forest.

If you can't face another email from me, let me know and I'm a ghost.

from spam-meister and Hogtowner Mike Daley...
The Hogtown Syncopators again: find your inner Crocodile Dundee.

I really hate doing this. Emailing twice in a month, that is. But my hands are tied, as you will see. The background is that we're playing at the Tranzac, my favourite music room in Toronto, on Tuesday, which may be tomorrow for you, it may be today, and it may be yesterday or more, depending on when you get around to reading this.

I love the Tranzac so much that I wrote a short essay about it for a contest about a year ago and won a beer, if I remember correctly. It's small, yes, and it hasn't completely shaken off its past as a humble watering hole for homesick Aussies and Kiwis. My Dad used to drink there with business associates of those persuasions, back in the 70s when Toronto sunlight was a little dimmer and the streets were not so well scrubbed. We played there once before, but I couldn't make the gig and you know it doesn't count. Tuesday is our official debut, and the reason my hands are tied is that it was originally slated for 7-9, and now we're playing from 6-8. This is a crucial revision and I need you to know.

Perhaps you work. In that case, come on down after said work. Perhaps you are between commitments. In that case, come on down for a breakfast beer. Cassandra will fix you up right, and you'll stay fixed. You will pay what you can. For us, not for the beer. She's remarkably firm on the price of that. Don't bother writing an essay, I've covered that angle.

It's on Brunswick, just south of Bloor near the Future Bakery, which is no longer a bakery but a breeding ground for hipsters who don't need bread. West of Spadina. East of the sun, west of the moon.

Hogtown Syncowhatties in May

What I mean is Hogtown Syncopators. Beloved, poverty-stricken, accept no substitutes.
Things are happening. We bring our long-running Graffiti's gig to a close this week, without Terra, who is off flitting around and hobnobbing. After that, no more Graffiti's in the foreseeable future, just some lovely one-nighters around town.
And those one-nighters are:

Saturday, April 29
4-7
Healey's
Queen and Bathurst, Toronto

Friday, May 12
9:00
Dominion on Queen
500 Queen St. East, Toronto

Wednesday, May 24
7-9
The Red Guitar
603 Markham St., Toronto
(near Honest Ed's)
a great intimate jazz room - note early time slot

from the desk of Hogtowner Mike Daley..
Thawing Five Frozen Hogs

Hey all.
It's the end of the month, which means it's time to avoid my landlord, and also to jot off a Hogtown Syncopators type email. Hogtown Syncopators, you say. Isn't that the traditional jazz quintet that I heard somewhere or other, and distractedly wrote down my email? My dear, they were good. I really have to check them out again. Especially that Mike Daley character. He's something special.
Well you can, puppy. Feast yer eyes.

Graffiti's
Baldwin at Kensington
Kensington Market, Toronto
every Wednesday 6-8:30
We're doing the Wednesdays for about another month, then it looks like we're switching to Fridays.

Gate 403
403 Roncesvalles (near Dundas)
Saturday, April 8
10:00 start
no cover
This is our first time at Gate 403, where I played my first gig after moving to Toronto three years ago. A good place to have a drink and relax, and to hear music. They have a piano. We won't be playing it.

Healey's
Bathurst at Queen
Saturday, April 29
4-7 pm
no cover
Back at Healey's, playing for shocked patrons who expected Jeff Healey's Jazz Wizards. Come down so that we can have someone on our side. In all seriousness, we are well liked at Healey's.

Dominion on Queen
Toronto
Friday, May 12
9 pm start
$6.00 cover
Why would you come and see our band at the Dominion for six bucks, when you can see us for free somewhere else? Because you are a rugged individualist, and you refuse to do the expected thing. And it would be really cool if you would come out and support us at this new venue for us, our first time in the East End.

There are more in the future, but I don't want to overtax you. In other news, we are still shaking off the dust after a two month layoff and looking with ever more desirous eyes on finishing our CD.

I bid you adieu

So hey, the band was recently mentioned in an online magazine called Gadzooks, and our picture is there too...check it out!

News March 8, 2006

Out here on the Daley family farm, affectionately known in these parts as "Parkdale Acres," the chicken are clucking just a little bit louder. The cows are clear-eyed and buoyant, and the pigs are positively sparkling. Why, mama, why?

Because Terra and Drew are back, that's why. They were gone. They were in Mexico, in fact, and they're back after just over a month and a half. This means that the Hogtowns are back too, as soon as today, which is Wednesday. At Graffiti's, that's where.

Graffiti's, the charming little bistro at the corner of Kensington and Baldwin in Kensington Market is the place where you can hear our close farmony ringing out once again. From 6 to 8:30, that's when.

But there's more. As soon as April 8, you can catch us at Gate 403, which coincidentally is located at 403 Roncesvalles. And then on April 29, doing the matinee at Healey's.

But soft! Is Bessie lactating a little more than usual? Do I detect a surfeit of eggs? Could it be that jazz music DOES in fact increase production in farm animals, as is claimed in the overlooked 1932 Boswell Sisters film Close Farm-ony?

Only those intrepid music lovers who venture out to our gigs know for sure. Bring your own livestock.

News January 31, 2006

Holding down the fort is one way to describe it, the fort being Toronto. Terra Hazelton, our starry-eyed drumatrix, is killin' em in Alberta with the Poly Jesters . I and my esteemed colleagues continue to battle cold Northern winds and seasonal depression with jazz.
Maybe a little more uptempo than usual, just to compensate. Mainly at Graffiti's (170 Baldwin, Kensington Market), which is in fact the ancestral home of the Hogtown Syncopators. And at, increasingly, other places too. Like Dominion on Queen, where we debut on Friday, April 7. And at Gate 403 (403 Roncesvalles), on April 8, which is, oddly, the next night. Two gigs. Two nights. Two opposite sides of town. Sounds like a tour to me.

Our much-vaunted return to the Rex Hotel in February has been postponed, owing to the absence of a certain drummer/model.

We return to the studio March 8 or so to hopefully put the final daubs of icing on our upcoming CD release.

And we continue to write and arrange new tunes. Terra is going to plotz when she hears our band arrangement of Fats Waller's piano solo "Viper's Drag".

That is all. Thanks for signing up for the mailing list, unless you are one of those lucky friends of mine that just kind of ended up on it. It's not my fault. I was drunk.

The Hogtown Syncopators are starting the New Year off with New Sound Files over on the 'sounds' page just for you!

News December 27, 2005

A little holly-laden note from a humble Syncopator.

As I write to you, Christmas looms around the corner, with its usual frustrations and joys. My shopping is almost done. The eggnog makes me dizzy. But those trad jazz kids never stop, and in fact we celebrated the season by composing a new instrumental at our usual Wednesday rehearsal. It has been christened "L'Coq du Neige", which may or may not be a proper French construction. It is, as far as I remember, the first tune that we've composed more or less collectively.
Come to Graffiti's on a Wednesday from 6-9 to hear "L'Coq du Neige" before it melts.

Please know, though, that we will be taking a break from Graffiti's in February to do the Wednesday 6-8 slot at the Rex Hotel, where we triumphantly triumphed back in September.
Furthermore, we had a lovely three days of recording a couple of weeks back at the Gas Station on Ward's Island, shepherded by the estimable Don Kerr. It's all in the service of our upcoming full-length CD, and we'll be back there not long into the new year to continue the building process.
Don't be shy about visiting our website.
And please have a happy and safe holiday. Try the eggnog. Or latkes. Or what have you. What have you?

your faithful servant,

note to webmaster from Mike Daley october 11, 2005

"hello Fran. By way of gig updates, we are no longer planning to do the Cervejaria gig. And the Rex gig is over till January. SO that leaves just Graffiti's on Wednesdays. Which suits us fine, 'cause we have a lot of rehearsing to do.

thanks
md"

And please do have a look at the homepage and the photos page for a couple of really beautiful photographs of the band.

News September 27, 2005

(from the official 'Hogtowners' newsletter)

Hello.
More news about your favourite hot jazz/swing/jump group from Toronto. The big news is that our web page is up at www.hogtownsyncopators.com (but you already know that since you're ,well, here). We're still coming up with a lot of the content, but you can read our scintillating bio and marvel at the retro design skills of Fran Porter, webmistress. Speaking of content, some is in the works. We had our first formal photo shoot yesterday at Terra's place, and I'm excited about the shots that I think we got. They will be all over the new site soon and in the liners for our new CD. Speaking of our new CD, we're booked in early December at the Gas Station on Ward's Island to record our first full-length CD with the legendary Don Kerr. So scratch that stuff I said last time about leaving room in your stockings. Go ahead, fill those stockings to the brim with toe socks or whatever it is that you people give to your loved ones. I will say, however, that a Hogtowns CD makes a great Easter gift. It will fit well in a basket and will sound good as an accompaniment to egg-smashing or chocolate eating or other solemn Christian rites.
But je digress.
What I also want to tell you is that we're doing our last Tuesday night gig at the Rex (Queen W. at University) for a while. That's tonight at 6:30. We'll be back in December, and possibly November. But not October. No, no. Not October. And we are, as always, at Graffiti's in Kensington Market (Baldwin St, specifically) on Wednesdays from 6-9. AND in October we'll be doing Wednesday nights after Graffiti's at Cervejaria at 842 College at Ossington. So there's no excuse not to check out this band. Except if you don't like us. I don't want to know.
